• Category 1 (Clean Water): Originates from a sanitary source, posing no substantial health risk. Examples include burst pipes, overflowing sinks, or rainwater. If left untreated, it can quickly degrade to higher categories within 24-48 hours as microorganisms multiply.

• Category 2 (Grey Water): Contains significant contamination and can cause discomfort or sickness if contacted or consumed. Sources include washing machine overflows, dishwasher discharge, or toilet overflows with urine (no faeces). This water requires professional remediation due to potential microbial growth.

• Category 3 (Black Water): Grossly contaminated and can contain pathogenic, toxigenic, or harmful agents, causing severe adverse reactions. Sources include sewage, rising floodwaters, or toilet backflows containing faeces. Category 3 water requires specialized handling and removal of all affected porous materials due to serious health risks.
